My Brutally Honest Smart Applier Review: Boss or Bust?

From my experience of applying, waiting, writing assessments, getting ghosted, receiving countless rejections, to finally landing a role, I can absolutely tell you that job hunting today is the Wild West.

Apart from the heartaches, the most hectic part of job hunting is having to constantly tailor your resume to align with each job’s specific requirements, and optimizing it to get past the dreaded Applicant Tracking System (ATS) scan. 

Now, imagine having a job board that not only recommends available roles but also takes the responsibility of customizing your CV and cover letters and applying for these numerous roles on your behalf. 

Sounds too good to be true, but that’s what you get with Smart Applier.

After months of creating multiple resumes and undergoing several rounds of optimization, I think it’s time to share my experience working with Smart Applier. 

So, let’s get to it.

What is Smart Applier?

Smart Applier is an AI tool that automates your job search by analyzing your resume, identifying job opportunities, and submitting a well-tailored application either automatically or with a single click. 

Unlike the other AI tools saturating the market and leaving people worried about their job security, Smart Applier AI is here to help you land your dream job.

Here’s a breakdown of all the features available on Smart Applier:

Simple Dashboard

Smart Applier is easy to use for any job seeker, regardless of technical expertise. Every important menu option, button, or field is easily accessible on the dashboard.

All you need to do to get your resume ready is fill out the required fields and click on a button to fire things off.

Complete Automation

Smart Applier streamlines your job search by automating the application process through identifying roles that align with your set skills and customized preferences. 

The system also helps you apply to the recommended jobs, reducing manual effort. And you will receive instant notifications to track views, ATS status, and interview requests.

Personalized Applications

Each application matches the specific job description, ensuring that your most relevant experiences and skills stand out. 

The system also uses ATS Optimization to format content, ensuring that it only submits résumés and cover letters curated to specific openings.

Multi-Language Support

While primarily focused on English, Smart Applier offers support for 17 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese.

Once you are on the homepage, change the default language, English, by selecting the language of your choice from the drop-down menu.

How Does Smart Applier Work?

Surprisingly, the first setup on Smart Applier, which is the longest stage you will have to complete only once, takes less than 30 minutes to complete.

 
Start by visiting the website and clicking on “Get started with Smart Applier.” Once you are in, you have two options:

  • Create your profile from scratch.
  • Upload your resume from another service.

To fully understand how Smart Applier works, let’s create a resume from scratch.

Add your basic details. Fill out the basic information, including your name, email address, phone number, and location. Then add a link to relevant profiles such as LinkedIn, Indeed, and your website. 

Click the “Professional Summary” tab to provide a brief overview of your professional experience. Keep it simple and straight to the point. 

Then add your job title and years of experience.

Next, click the “Work Experience” tab to provide details about your career highlights. Add the role, dates, company name and location, and job description. 

If you’re struggling to come up with a coherent explanation of your roles, click “Regenerate” to have the AI generate a better version. 

Once done, click on “Save Changes” to add a different career highlight. You can toggle the switch or completely delete the ones you don’t wish to appear in the final resume.

Click the “Education” tab to add your work and education history. Details to add include:

  • Name of institution
  • Address
  • Degree/major/qualification
  • Start and end dates
  • Additional information.

Once done, click “Save Changes” to complete the process. Click on “Add New” to enter more academic achievements.

Add Relevant Skills

Include all relevant skills required for the job. Also, you have the option to select at least five skills. If you don’t know what to add, enter a primary skill and click on “Generate Skills with AI” to get relevant suggestions.

Once you’re satisfied with the output, click “Save Changes.” 

To create another version of your resume, click on “Create New AI Generated Resume”. To explore the job market, click on “Apply for Jobs”.

You’ll be prompted to install the Chrome Extension. Go to the tab to which you’ve been redirected and click on “Add to Chrome”.

Run the installation and refresh the page. Your application dashboard will open. Click on “Apply for Jobs”.

You will be redirected to a new tab to sign into ZipRecruiter. Once you’re logged in, the Smart Applier extension will start applying for jobs on your behalf.

Confirm the spelling of each keyword used. Once it finds a suitable match, it automatically applies for the role.

The record of all the jobs you have applied for is automatically saved on your homepage under “my applications”, making it easy for you to track them. 

Other Products Similar to Smart Applier

What are the Potential Limitations of Smart Applier?

While reviewing one of the applications created on my behalf by Smart Applier, I noticed that it had incorrectly answered a question. 

The job was with a mobility company, and on the application, there was a question to verify if I had any prior experience in mobility, specifically EV charging, and Smart Applier responded “No”. 

Meanwhile, I am presently working on an EV project in my current employment. 

Smart Applier also wants you to be confident in your application by enabling you to take a final look, edit, and review it before submitting it to the recruiter. Take the time to review some applications, especially those that are specifically important to you. 

Lastly, keep an eye on your email. Once Smart Applier sends out an application, you are most likely to get an email from the company, and unfortunately, Smart Applier will not prompt you to check your email.

That’s your part of the bargain, and you have to ensure that you are always on top of your game.
